Aaargh! Wtf, I read this small, tiny, 1 page tutorial of an artist on deviantart.com about photograph workflow and one remark made me think. It was about converting from aRGB to sRGB color space before posting on the web. If you don't do that, images colors will appear flat and colorless. Since this was exactly my problem I decided to dive into it.

Indeed, the bottom line is: something was terribly wrong with my workflow. This has been ever since I had my 20D, which is over 2000 pictures now! Ofcourse I have all the original RAW files, and even the adjusted JPGs that come out of my RAW editor are fine.

So a little bit of Photoshop Batch/Action combinations is enough to be able to almost automatically convert whole series at once. For a start, I did one (although the images come out too big as far as file size is concerned, so a little tweaking and trade-off needs to be done there). So actually THIS is what is representative of my current capabilities as a photographer, given my current set of equipment.

You can imagine I am both shocked and excited at the same time. I let the latter prevail. Since I have to play two games of underwaterhockey today I do not have time to work on this much more today, but hopefully soon more series will be converted into what they should have looked like in the first place :)

Well that wraps it all up, a nice summer's behind me (and a bright future lures ahead). My summer started later than expected: finishing up my internship took a little more time then expected, although I didn't really need to stress out and got everything finished in time to have 1 week left before I'd head off to Sweden. That week I spent on work and taking pictures with my new camera lense: Serie 1 and Serie 2.

After three weeks of fun and adventure in Sweden, I had another floating week in which I worked, felt ill and managed to work on my USB project a little (I have a 2 MB memory stick now, it's only 20 cenitmeters long :).

Last week I've been running around with a bunch of kids as a volunteer. Such things really fill up your 'mental' battery, just because it's so fullfilling. On the other hand, it's hard work too :)

Now, nothing but a drowsy Sunday separates me from the things I'll be doing this year, of which graduating for (top) Master of Neuroscience will be the center-point. [popup]
 

Update: Project Beta - Take a Decent Picture of a Bird of Prey

A new summer emerged and since I'm finished at the University for this year and I got a nice stependium for next year I found myself with some extra spare time as well as a brand new canon 300mm L IS USM lense.

I checked the spots from last year but no success. Instead, I took pictures unrelated to this project (yes, they will be up soon). However, later in the afternoon I saw some birds hoovering over the lands near a bunch of pine-trees. After a long detour to get there I managed to shoot a few pictures. But they were too far away and I couldn't get closer. In the end, I got 1 picture which at least shows it's a bird :). It's no Kestrel though! So hope I'll be able to figure out wat it is indeed. Wow, best nog wel lastig, zo iets eenvoudigs als een mondharmonica op de foto zetten. Deze foto kwam tot stand met de camera aan mn pc gekoppeld (prima systeem) op statief. De harmonica zelf zit met een elastiekje om een 'soldeerstandaard' zodat ie in de lucht zweeft en de achtergrond ver weg is en dus wazig wordt. Het licht komt van burolamp (en een beetje van mn bedlampje). Voor extra scherptediepte stond het diafragma op 25. Met een ISO van 200 kwam ik tenslotte op een sluitertijd van 15 seconden. De belichting aan de onderkant rechts komt via een wit A4-tje dat eronder lag. Door dit blaadje te verplaatsen kon ik de 'hoek' van deze reflectie bepalen. Fancy huh? Witbalans heb ik bepaald door een A4 tje eroverheen te leggen en dezelfde foto te maken. De uiteindelijke foto is in RAW formaat genomen, en softwarematig een halve stop 'onderbelicht' (accu was leeg geraakt, anders had ik wel een nieuwe genomen met een halve stop minder), contrast is een tikkeltje aangepast en de kleurverzadiging redelijk wat. Al met al matig tevreden maar wel weer veel geleerd! [popup]
 

Sta je een beetje de aardappels af te gieten, begint de wc voortijdig door te spoelen. Vooral vervelend omdat hij verstopt bleek en ik het water al waterend zag stijgen. Gelukkig stopte het vlak voor het randje, anders had ik moeten kiezen tussen afknijpen en natte voeten. Beide vrij onideaal, vooral omdat ik 10 seconden later een tentamen te maken had.

Een tentamen met vage vragen, die ik heb beantwoord met vage antwoorden. Het behoeft dus geen betoog dat dit zal uitmonden in een vaag cijfer (ergens tussen i en pi-kwadraat schat ik zo).

Happy Newyear everybody! I wish everyone all the best for 2006. I know it's kinda late, but he! I didn't go to the party I planned, instead I stayed with my parents and later on had a few beers with some friends. A perfect combination to start the new year. Newyearsday I spent at home, doing nothing interesting - watched 'Batman Begins' and did some coding for my website.... (read more)
 

Eigenlijk was mijn kerst gewoon 4 dagen lang dik prima. Wat kan je meer wensen dan warmte, vrijheid, lichtjes, familie, vriendjes en vriendinnetjes? Lekker eten, een leuke film, een druppel humor en dwarrelende sneeuwvlokjes zo vlak voor je bent uitgefietst (omdat je 'er bent') en 2x met plezier naar je werk. En uiteraard een potje virtueel skaten tegen m'n (toch al iets minder) kleine neefje (zie foto :)

De kerstkaart blijft nog even staan (en in mn blog zal ie - al nieuwe berichten schrijvende - gewoon langzaam wegzakken). De tekst erbij vind ik nog steeds uitermate briljant. Hoe vaker ik het hoor hoe meer het me raakt, op zo een heldere, simpele zekere manier te beloven er altijd voor een ander te zijn. Gewoon, als je me nodig hebt ben ik er (en dat kan dan slaan op een vriendschap of relatie), no matter what.
