Title: Project Beta - Take a Decent Picture of a Bird of Prey
Start: 20/12/22

Objective: Wouldn't it be great to take a picture of a nice bird of prey, like a falcon or hawk? I just presented myself the challenge to achieve this goal. I hope to learn a lot along the way :) Due date isn't set. I really wouldn't know when I'll have the time and opportunity to work on this one.

Back in business

A new summer emerged and since I'm finished at the University for this year and I got a nice stependium for next year I found myself with some extra spare time as well as a brand new canon 300mm L IS USM lense.

I checked the spots from last year but no success. Instead, I took pictures unrelated to this project (yes, they will be up soon). However, later in the afternoon I saw some birds hoovering over the lands near a bunch of pine-trees. After a long detour to get there I managed to shoot a few pictures. But they were too far away and I couldn't get closer. In the end, I got 1 picture which at least shows it's a bird :). It's no Kestrel though! So hope I'll be able to figure out wat it is indeed. Kestrel (Falco Tinnunculus) - Better pictures

The next time I went back to the dunes (Kennermeduin) I went to the spot where I saw 'them' the first time. There, you've got this stairs that lead to the top of a dune which brings you vertically closer to the falcons without leaving the footpath. The only thing to do then is to wait (untill they get horizontally closer :). Luckily, two or three falcons were hunting in the area and once in a while one would get close enough to take a few shots.... (read more)

More blurry Falcons

After the previous discovery, I have been to the library to get some books. They revealed that I am probably dealing with falcons, which ones exactly was hard to tell based on the first series of pictures. So it was time to visit them again.... (read more)

Breakthrough - I think I saw a bird-of-prey!

By Jason [- 03/08/05 (21:49:56) -]
Well my plans for combining progress of this project and camping (optionally in the wild) didn't got through this summer. But when I was walking around with my camera in a national park nearby ("Nationaal Park Kennermeduin") - 30 mins cycling - I discouvered birds that acted like they were hunting for some prey! ... Start - Googling around

By Jason [- 23/12/04 (15:00:00) -]
So I started on the www. I was thinking about finding a good spot in Holland (cheaper and easier than going abroad) and camp there for a while during the next summer. Some things came up but it's really hard to find something concrete when you don't have a clue where to start - I didn't even know what bird I wanted to take a photo from. Actually I knew hardly anything about these kind of birds except the general knowlegde.... (read more)
